What Raspberry canes should I buy and where from?

BMLBML Posts: 151

I received a "Horticultural catalogue today with some Raspberry canes advertised so I keyed the term, "Raspberry" into the Internet and a local garden centre came up with the following selection.

Raspberry 'Malling Admiral' - 10  canes  £10

Raspberry 'Polka' - 10 canes £15

Raspberry 'Valentina'  10 canes £17

Raspberry 'Glen Doll'  10 canes £10

Raspberry 'Autumn Treasure'  10 canes £15

Raspberry 'Joan J' 10 canes £15

Raspberry 'Glen Lyon' 10 canes £10

Raspberry 'Glen Lyon' 10 canes £10

Raspberry 'Autumn Bliss' 10 canes £10

I have no idea how to select which of the above is the better plant or even if there are better and less expensive ones on the market and I wonder if any would care to offer their advice.  While I'm at it I don't have the faintest idea how many plants or canes I need to fill a garden about 20 feet wide so I would welcome some advice on a new person to Raspberry grower.

My vote: Polka, 10 canes, plant about 2ft apart (a bit less so they all fit evenly.)  Best all-rounder of the autumn fruiting types in my opinion.  Don't plant both summer fruiting and autumn fruiting canes in the same area (or even close) or you quickly find yourself with a pruning nightmare!

I would go for Polka for a first timer as well. If you are getting bare root canes, order now, to  be delivered and planted in October while the soil is still warm.  I would use a specialist fruit supplier, rather than getting canes at the garden centre which could have been hanging around a bit.

Many thanks for such valuable advice which regrettably leads to a supplementary question.  Could you please identify a specialist fruit supplier.
