Would my Hydrangea Sargentiana benefit from a hard pruning?

adam.mgadam.mg Posts: 30
My Sargentiana has been suffering, i'm told from drought. I cut it back two weeks ago, new growth can be seen. Should I cut back much harder? Is it too leggy?

I think i might need to move it to the other side of the garden because, I guess, this tree in the neighbour's garden is causing drought in the corner, and the plant is not happy. Any advice?

I love this plant. It's one of my favourites. It's so graceful when it's healthy.

Normally the advice for H. sargentiana would be, very little or no pruning.
In this case however I might try pruning back to buds lower down. I would do it in Spring and you might lose next years flowers.

I'd just give it a bucket of water a day till the heatwave ends and you get proper rain.

I pruned my Hyd.aspera ssp.sargentiana down three years ago and it took three years to recover ! Glorious this year . I leave it now to its own devices .
If you must prune it , just go down to where there are healthy lateral shoots ; these should grow strongly next year .
Keep moist at all times , preferably with rainwater (!) ; that's not intended as a joke ! :*
