Honeysuckle cutting

Ruthie_QRuthie_Q Posts: 26
Hi there.
I have never had much luck with cuttings but now i have an allotment Im having another go again. I have taken some honeysuckle cuttings. Followed all the advice out there. Right place to cut, cutting powder, soil mix etc. One by one the 4 have died. I have 1 left with leaves but one last night all the leaves fell off. However when i pulled it out the soil there were tiny roots. Is it worth keeping my 'twig' or should i call it a day

  • Have you tried the layering method? If the honeysuckle is from your own garden it will be very easy to do. I think you can do it in late summer. 👍
There maybe someone else on here who can give you more advice. 😊

I've had more success with hardwood cuttings in autumn, as the leaves fall. I'm no good at looking after cuttings and hardwood doesn't need so much care

That sounds like me Ruthie. Half my garden is grown from seed, trees, shrubs, the lot. But cuttings :(  I know how to take them and if I don't know when, I can look it up. But keeping them alive is very hit and miss.

Haha thanks for that. The net doesnt help with yr confidence. Its always so easy. I cant even get rosemary sat in water for 3 weeks to root  :(  ah well

Rosemary prefers to root in a gritty compost.   If your honeysuckle twig has roots, nurture it along but try layering and hardwood cuttings too till you find a method that suits you.

An add-on............you mentioned the leaves feel off, when I do cuttings I take most of the leaves of and cut the remaining 2 in half, I also pinch off any potential new growth at the tip so the cutting has more energy to grow roots, not sustain it's leaves (I hope that makes sense).  Also helps if you place the cutting in a clear plastic container eg. cut a small coke bottle in half, put drainage holes in the bottom ..........then you can see the new roots rather than having to tug the cutting to test for roots.......as tugging can sometimes cause irreparable damage.  Good luck with it!

Hi Mary. I did only have 2 1/2 leaves left. Cut them off as per the net. I was gutted. I have one cutting left with 2 1/2 leaves apart from twiggy. So I guess  its a race against time. I even misted & took the lid off the propogator. These cuttings were just ungrateful if  you ask me  :D thanks for the coke bottle tip thats a brill idea
