Can you help me ID this shrub?

Hi!

Please be kind enough to help me identify this shrub!

Its just outside my front window, and it doesn't look healthy at all.  A lot of the leaves have turned brown.

It is a mature shrub, and it is in a sheltered position, and i'm not sure what is wrong with it.



Does anyone know what it is and what is wrong with it?

    That may be a Weigela. I have many shrubs with brown leaves like that his year. Lack of water and heat are the main problems

    Hmmmm. maybe you're right Hosta, more likely to be suffering drought as well.

    Unfortunately, yes. the bulk of it doesn't look too bad though

    Is there no way of telling which type?

    The information here https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=360 gives different advice on pruning for different varieties - shall I just leave it and wait till it flowers next to see?

    Water it generously - at least 5 litres a time - over the next few days and until you get some decent rain.    Always best to wait for flowers to help identify both the shrub and its pruning requirements tho if it's stressed it may well not flower at all this year.    It will be doing its best to survive by conserving energy for its roots and shoots.
