Cabbage black slime identity

Just started picking my spring cabbage. Managed to protect them from Cabbage whites, but when I went into the heart of my cabbage I found a lot of damage. Sorry no photo as I cleaned it up before thinking. There is evidence of something munching and some of the cabbage has turned to a kind of black slime rotting the leaves. There are tiny black dots near the base of the leaves in the heart. Otherwise the cabbage seems healthy

Anyone know?

thank you

There is no sign of damage to the outer leaves, only the inner core. I have done soem research since posting and am now thinking black rot?
