If you don't want to get the roots out, I find stump killer works wonders - and does not effect other plants. Cut down, apply a little with a paint brush to fresh stumps
Thank you @ZeroZero1 but I'm not keen on the chemicals either, anyway I'm going to need a bit of exercise when this enforced lethargy is over and the temp drops

Ah @Picidae the dangers of skimming and speed reading, no snobbery in my garden, reasonably egalitarian, but too much snowberry - sorry Symphoricarpos albus

its the only way i've found of getting rid, cut it down, treat the cut stumps with SBK (stump and brushwood killer), it might need a reapplication the following year but it does a good job and if your careful with the application (use a small paintbrush) it reduces anything nasty getting into the soil
Thank you @treehugger80, as I said I'm not keen on chemicals but have used SBK for a sycamore that hid from me until it was too late. Paintbrush is a sound idea, hooray now I have a back up. Just need an opportunity to get out there now!

I have a 5lb mattock! It's brilliant, tried it out this morning and had a great time, might have scared the neighbours a bit though. Haven't tried it on the snowberries yet as I have to work toward them through the ivy and nettles but they know I'm coming
Should have invested in one of these years ago. Annoyingly the sycamore stump is sprouting again but nice tree people say they will see to it, so, cup of tea and back to it.

A mattock was one of the treasures I found in my garden Herbs. It was jammed in a parasol holder near the plastic panelling and apple picking ladder. It only has ahalfa handle but it's still very handy. Not everything that we found was treasure. The bass drum lever turned out to be the legs off a plastic heron.
