What is it with people who hold power?  Are they totally oblivious of every living thing around them?  That's a depressing read @Pete8, almost as bad the the recent vote by MPs in England deciding that animals have no feelings  :'(

Not surprised Trump has approved GM, always thought his origins were suspect  ;)

Am surprised he hasn't been mobbed yet by any one of a number of intelligent, environmental groups. Where is the Darwinian principle when you want it.

He seems set to reverse every decision made by Obama, no matter what harm he does. I am concerned that after Brexit we will end up with all sorts of American rubbish over here AND their attitude to farming and the environment.

    So am I.

From what the American corporations were pushing with the TIPP and America's bargaining power over us after we leave the EU, especially if we get no deal with the EU, it may force us to accept GM foods if we want a trade deal with them.

They have a habit of attempting to attach such conditions to trade or aid deals - not always successfully though.

I would also point to the potential of Big Pharma to undermine the NHS.

Whilst i agree with you about pesticide usage, I am in favour of GM crops, as I believe it is the only viable option, if we intend to feed the whole world.

It's interesting to note that when discussing topics such as GM foods, many concepts tend to get rolled into one concept. Sometimes deliberately, I suspect, to obfuscate.

The question of whether GM foods are 'good' tends to hide a number of sub questions - the real meat of the discussion.

Personally, I am for further scientific study into GM foods especially now we have technologies such as CRISPR.

I am queasy about entrusting part of the food supply of a country to a foreign corporation or government - or even a corporation belonging to that country and not necessarily foreign.

I am also queasy about the GM technology as currently implemented by corporations - too much pesticide use.

I also have concerns that current GM technology, if we use it, may have implications for our future food trade with Europe or other parts of the world.

There are other concerns I have as well but I am not inherently against the technology itself.

I can see much benefit in the 'Golden Rice project' for instance.

I do not have enough scientific knowledge to make a good judgement but I note the mistakes of the past in introducing to foreign countries plants and animals which then harm native species. There are economic, political and moral issues which I can understand and they all make me uneasy about GM. The addition of Trumpian attitudes combined with these persuade me that reliance on the US could be a very bad thing indeed.

I agree with doc - I don't dismiss GM without having more [accurate] info and knowledge on the subject. Many countries can't sustain food crops to feed their population, and it may only get worse in years to come.

However, are we really surprised at anything Tango man does?   :/
