Cherry tree query

Standen1Standen1 Posts: 65
Hi everyone
I have had this cherry tree for several years now, can’t remember the name of it though. It gets flowers and cherries that seem to grow in different places around the trunk but it has the bare stretch in the middle - just wondering if I should prune it back to the next main set of leaves, if so, is this the correct time of the year? Really don’t want to kill it as it was a present.many thanks for any help

That looks like it has been grown as a 'columnar' cherry tree.  There is some good cherry pruning advice on Chris Bowers site, below, and there is a section near the bottom on pruning that type.  It would benefit from being repotted into a larger pot (use a JI#3 compost) and may not be happy where it is (can you give it more sun?) as I'd expect it to have put on more growth than it has this year.  Once flowering starts next spring, I'd feed it with tomato feed once a fortnight.  If it does fruit, you'll need to net it otherwise the birds will have the lot.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Hi, many thanks for this info,
it did have more growth earlier this year with quite a few flowers and cherries - yes the birds pinched them! It still had the bare stretch in the middle though..... will certainly check out the website you have suggested,, thank you
