    VPM - having been told the correct name to identify their plant that poster continued insisting it's a thistle and declared botanical names are fussy.   Just stupid.

    Greek is also involved in plant nomenclature:
    Dryopteris comes from the Greek.
    Hydrangea is derived from Greek  - hudro and angeion and thence to modern Latin.
    Just clarifying a point.

    The word is said to derive from the Nahuatl Indian (Aztec) word ahuácatl meaning testicle. It's either a reference to the fruit's shape or its purported aphrodisiac qualities.
