Never too late to remove them if you can as it will always have some benefit in reducing the nutrients of the soil. If any had got to the stage of having ripe seed though it might have been of benefit to leave them to drop the seed as they dried. Is anyone in charge of the management of the field? It might be worth taking some extra cuts off this year to weaken any grass that's growing there.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
