Pumpkin Harvest

how do you tell when pumpkins are ready for harvest and to be cut off the vine?

i know its not for awhile yet, but i have about 6 pumpkins that are about 16 inch diameter right now and seem to be getting bigger every time i look at them,

they are still green in color and not orange yet, is that normal?

Colour will depend on the variety. The age-old method to test readiness is to rap the pumpkin with your knuckles. If it sounds hollow, it's approaching maturity. Not very scientific but a guide. Perhaps a better guide is the stem attaching the pumpkin to the vine. It will eventually start to wither and turn brown indicating approaching maturity.
