It's Flying Ant Day!

Just been out and was immediately surrounded.  Have come back in to let them do what they do.

I was born in Tanganyika and looked after by a native "aya" while my parents cared for lepers.  In flying ant season the locals all caught as many as they could and ate them live.  What they couldn't eat they fried for later.  Apparently I just followed suit and did what they all did.  Wouldn't do it now.

  • How big were they?   The ones here don't seem worth the trouble!  LOL!

I haven't seen any yet and not many ants nests as far as I can see

  • I've got a few ants nests in the garden.  I try to avoid going near them as ant bites are painful.  But a few times I've pulled up a weed without realising there's a nest beneath it.

I wasted 20 minutes on Thursday watching a - colony? swarm? clump? whatever - taking to the air with a handful of big dragonflies swooping about and eating themselves practically to a standstill

I knew they were about to start flying as a load of seagulls were silently flying overhead - that's the only way l know, as normally the gulls are squawking away. Sure enough, masses of ants were soon coming out of the lawn. Fascinating.

Took the doggies for a late walk yesterday at dusk and spotted a writhing black mass across the back lane.   Thousands of black ants on the move, on foot.  Made me think of all those 70s films about soldier ants eating everything and everyone in their path.
