I grow all poppies succesfully here. I get some self seed, but usually I start them in the greenhouse in small pots and plant out fairly quickly, ensuring they are very wet. They are a bit tricky, but I find if you can keep the rootball intact it helps.
I made a mistake with my eschsholzia (say that when you are durnk!) and planted in the shade - they grew leggy and flopped, but still flowered. What a wonderful flower the are. Like a inca sun. Also of mention are the black poppies, they are a superb plant for a border (IMO) a well established one in good soil will grow sturdy and the flowers dominate they eye. Then there are the wild reds - always remind me of the first world war....  these self seed well. The love newly raked ground.
The Shirleys. I saw these at Chelsea with stems as big as a man's finger, so impressive, but I have never got them too be that big.

    I am a poppy nut.
  • I love them, they have come up from seed chucked here and there, all different peachy shades.
The whole truth is an instrument that can only be played by an expert.

I'd gather some seed pods ( just before they explode ) and keep in a paper bag. Just for insurance, but mine even survived The Beast this  year.
    Devon.
