Dicentra/bleeding heart

Mary370Mary370 Posts: 2,003
I have a dicentra which is dying down now.  Can I split it now and transplant some of it to another part of the garden or is it the wrong time of year?  Do I need to lift the whole plant in order to divide it?

That’s what I would do Mary, also I do what I fancy whatever time of the year.

I split one and got 9 plants from it.

Thanks @Lyn I'm new to dividing plants as I've only ever divided hostas.  I just don't want to kill the plant.  After all the rainfall over the last few days I thought now would be a good time.  I suppose as the dicentra is quite large, at least 2 little plants should survive?

Definitely, they won’t know they’ve been moved.

@Lyn could I also move dahlias now even though they are flowering?  I've been growing them from seed, this year and last year as I want particular colours for the front garden......I always leave them in the ground, couldn't be bothered with lifting and storing tubers and bulbs.

Having said I move anything anytime, I wouldn’t move flowering dahlias, best thing is  to tie a label on stating colour them remove them when they’ve died down after 1st frosts.
