Help with planting under laurel

Looking for advice on what plants to use under laurel as my neighbour has one on our borrder and i want to plant some small shrubs on my side

    I think you might struggle to get shrubs to grow under an established laurel hedge. The ground is probably full of roots. 
    How much space do you have in front of the hedge? Is there a few feet of workable soil?
    A photo of the area would be helpful.

    The hedge is on her side of the fence
