This is Acer Palmatum Beni-o-Katake. It has quite finely divided leaves but not as fine as a full dissectum. We bought this as an already trained standard a few years ago. The label said max height 2.5m it is a little taller than that but not much, but they can be pruned to keep them within a space if you wish. There are a lot of myths about not being able to prune Acers but in fact they can be pruned, the only time you must not is in early spring when the sap is rising as they will bleed. Large structural cuts should only be done in winter when dormant but smaller cuts to shape the tree can be done late spring to Autumn if you need to.

wow...this is beautiful too....My acer just had all the lower branches, up to 5 ft high chopped off by a so called gardener without permission. He was just employed to lay a new lawn. I wonder if they would ever grow back, but I doubt it, because they had been chopped off right from the trunk.

    Hence the replacement sought

Acers are  most often grafted onto root stocks so maybe this is on a more vigorous one. Also remember the industry standard is to quote the size after 10 years but this does not mean it will stop getting bigger after that. Larchfield trees have a good website you may find yours on there, or try Norfield Nurseries they exhibited at Chelsea.
Can I have the link to the Larchfield website please?

I’d you type ‘Larchfield Trees’ into any internet search engine you will get the website but here it is:

  • Hi sorinab you could try Acer Palmatum "beni shichi henge".
Its green leaves with white edging and they say it  keeps pretty small.
Height should grow to 125cm so good also for pots.

Thank you, but I'm looking for a tall, red Acer
  • Atropurpureum is one of the most common and accessible acers I've come across. They have dark red leaves and grow about 2 metres within 10 - 20 years and are found in a lot of garden centres and super markets. If you're looking for a more striking red, go for Beni Maiko or Phoenix. Octopus are red but are laceleaf also. I am obsessed with acers and have a few varieties (Atropurpureum, Butterly, Taylor, Emerald Lace, etc.).

I want a tall one..... It's not just the colour, I need to find one which would grow very tall. Mine reached 5 metres in about 10 years or more.
