An effective electric strimmer.

I'm fed up with shattering myself starting my motorised strimmer so could someone recommend an good electric one or should I buy a chepo replacing it as it falls to bits over time?

Sorry to jump in on your discussion BML seemed silly to start another one on virtually the same subject so close together.

I have a makita cordless one. I'd got a cheapy one before (Bosch) and the battery was rubbish, so I went for a brand I knew has good battery life (OH's power tools) and also allows me to use his battery charger and even his spare batteries if he's not looking. There are other good brands but they are all comparable prices unless you can find one on a special offer - which you might at the moment with grass not growing much this summer.

The strimmer itself isn't a problem, so if you have a power supply handy then I'd just get whatever is on offer and don't worry too much. The motor may pack up if you strim too many docks and nettles but if you're only strimming grass, the cheapest one in the shop will be fine. If you need to go cordless, then get the best you can afford - it's the batteries that cost the money. But having one where the battery life diminished within a year from 15 minutes to less than 5 made it pointless. The makita battery lasts about 45 minutes which is enough to get done most things I need to do regularly.

Make sure that whatever you get comes with battery and charger, or add the costs of same to the price of the unit.  Battery and charger can double the cost particularly if you don't plan to buy anything else which requires that battery.

I bought a Bosch Strimmer about 3 years ago and the time available to strim with the battery went down until it is now not worth using. I contacted Bosch directly and they said they dont make the relevant battery and I could "get one on line " through different suppliers. No thanks.

I have found a solution. I now pay a 16 yo lad to strim my paths for £10.00 a time and he uses his parents strimmer

I use a Flymo XT cordless. It does the job well, and battery life is very good.
