It has “bunches” of small white flowers in spring and there are a lot of shoots coming up from the ground around it. Not sure if that makes a difference! I’ll google the Lilac Stringa Vulgaris now. Thanks.
Looks like google agrees guys. Thanks! How is best to prune it, and how can I maximise the flowering, as it only seems to produce a few flower trusses each year. Will this improve as it matures? Could some of the small shoots at its base be self seeded saplings? If so could I dig them up and replant instead of pruning them off? sorry for all the questions!
Probably not worth growing on from seedlings as they will have small flowers. Your plant may itself be a seedling. If the flowers don't look like much then no amount of pruning will change them. They need to be vegetatively propagated to get the best cultivars. If it were mine I would be tempted to remove it and replace with a named cultivar.

I'm probably wrong 😄.
