I haven't bought any plants for many years. And once I got in to seed saving and sharing/swapping, I haven't bought any seeds either for nearly 3 years now.
If you join organisations like the Hardy Plant Society and/or the RHS then you can be part of their seed distribution. This allows you to grow all sorts of oddities.
And also the Heritage Seed Library at Garden Organic:
I love to grow from seed also, and nowadays rarely buy plants. I do have trouble with seed collecting, I'm not sure but I often wonder if it is just too damp here to collect seeds, as they don't seem to dry on the plant. This year I managed to save some pansy seeds.........purely by chance.

I've grown a number of their rare heritage tomatoes and played my part in saving/sharing seed and keeping them going for future growers.
