Out of hand garden

Appreciate advice on a 40yo overgrown garden. Small plot 20m wide x 8m deep and slight slope Lt to Rt. It has a mature Sycamore tree of approx 50 years and the lawn has more weed than grass which covers virtually the whole width of the plot. The only shrub worth keeping is an overgrown Rhododendron 'Christmas Cheer'.
I am no gardener (as yet) and any advice on where to start would be appreciated

Apart from the sycamore, the rhodie and grass, what else have you got? Some pics would be good and give us an idea of your tasks.

We can advise you better if you tell us what sort of soil you've got, eg is it sandy or clayey, acid or alkaline?  Probably acid since there's a flourishing rhododendron.   And what compass point does it face?  That will determine how much sun it gets.  Also you need to think about what you want to use the garden for.  Will it be a play space for children?  Do you want to support wildlife? Grow stuff to eat? Barbecues and entertaining?

You need to think what you want and discuss it with friends and family and then draw a garden out so you have something to refer to.

If you were going to buy a car what would you want as features.

What do you want it to look like in April 2019 and 2022 and 2027 ?
