Just bought an ‘Acer atropurpureum palmatum’ today... it’s only about a foot in height so still young... is it better to keep it in a pot for now or can it go straight in the ground? thanks 👍
Leave in a pot until it's a good size. Young ones tend to suffer in freezing condition. You will need somewhere to overwinter for the next 3 to 4 years, where it will get enough moisture but not too cold.
Do not let it dry out in summer or winter.
They're a bit fussy but worth it.
Eventually yes it needs to be in the ground with moist enough ground and dappled or part shade.
If you are in the UK, it shouldnt need winter protection, they dont like full sun or wind, ericaceous compost in the pot, yes keep in watered in summer, I wouldnt water it in winter. they come from Japanese woodland areas,I wouldnt plant it out at this time of the year, I would wait till next spring.
Agree with all the above ; dappled shade , slightly acidic soil , try to use only rainwater (bloody joke at the moment) ; above all , keep moist at all times .
I've seen Acers leaves curl up in pots after the owners forgot to water for ONE-DAY during hot spells .
Thanks for all the answers! I’ve put it in a slightly bigger pot and sunk it in the ground in the position I’d like it to eventually be in, more the see how it goes with that position

Ask the supplier as they want you to be happy so you buy another.

I have several Acers in pots and even this summer watering twice a week has been fine
