The leaves on the OP's picture don't match.

Whatever it is, whatever name it has, I have it in my garden, and I can assure you @Ladybird4 it IS an umberlifer.
I see no need to confuse the situation for the OP .

I'm not saying hogweed is not an umbellifera and I have no intention of confusing the situation.

We get them at our Devon barn, too. I wonder if it's a local variant? It does seem to be a redder version of common hogweed. It's not caused any problems here but it is a rather sinister looking thing.

The flower - without the slug - is reminiscent of one of the Aristolochias. Hogweed is an umbellifera.

Am I the only person who is confused?

I think you two are talking at crossed purposes.

I think it's Angelica sylvestris, rather compromised by its growing conditions.  So not scary at all!

  • Wow, thank you so much for all your replies, that’s so helpful. And interesting to hear that others have the same in devon. We do have more recognisable hogweed too - I might send a picture of that to get your expert advice as to whether it’s the common or giant variety

Oh that's a good shout. There is a purple one of those, I think. @beckycocker1 Is it growing in a damp area?
