Help with moving a Rowan Mountain Ash

Hello all,

I am new to the forum, but may be coming to you all for more advice in the near future, as I am hopefully moving house with a garden much larger than my current small plot.

Part of that move will include taking a Rowan Mountain Ash tree with me, that was planted in memory of my brother. The move will hopefully be within the next 4-6 weeks, and the tree is about 6ft high, doesn't have a large trunk, maybe 5-6cm diameter, and is currently nicely covered in green leaves.

Can you give me any tips on how I might achieve the move? I have access to well-rotted horse manure, courtesy of my mum's stables, and have various sized bags and pots available, plus about 3 nearby garden centres, so hopefully I will be able to successfully move the tree with your advice.

Thanks in advance,
Rob.

It's not the ideal time of year to be moving a small tree, but if you have to move it then make sure it has been thoroughly watered for several days beforehand.  Dig as big a rootball as you think you'll be able to move and wrap the rootball in an old sheet or similar.  When you get to the new home get it replanted as soon as possible and again water it well.

Hi Rob, I think trying to move a tree of that size in the next 6 weeks would be very unlikely to succeed and almost certainly result in the tree not surviving.  It would have a very good chance if moved while dormant, say from November to late Feb.  Perhaps you could come to some arrangement with the new owners to come back and dig it up later in the year?
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
