How to remove cuprinol garden shades- just applied

Hi so yesterday we stripped out garden decking back to bare wood, I started staining it with a cuprinol garden shades in iris, thinking it would be a lovely navy blue, iv woke up this morning to a bright royal blue! 😔 it looks terrible! Is there an easy was to remove new stain? So i can go over in a different colour? Thanks!

  • You can't get rid but you can paint over it .it won't come out as a true colour but you could most likely dumb it down to a more livable colour. test pots and a test piece of timber would show you what colour you could end up with

You could try painting over with a grey stain to knock back the intensity of the colour, patch testing in an inconspicuous place first. The blue will fade a little with time, however, so I would try living with it a bit first, if you can bear it!

You will struggle to paint over Shades as it has a water repelling element that also repels susbsequent coats of paint or stain. In fact, if you leave it too long (only talking a few hours) you cannot even apply a second coat if that is needed.

You'll have to give the surface a 'key' to over-coat it.

I just painted my summerhouse with this paint. Be aware that because the paint is for rough timber, the finish is waterproof, the second coat does not go on so well. Try a test area before if you can. I do know what you mean by Cuprinol shades not being as seen on the tin / charts, I had the same issue with a fence paint. They are very good paints

If you need to key this stain before going over it (didn’t realise it was so repellent :D) try going over it with an electric sander, to do just that...  that in itself may be enough to knock the colour back, if not, paint on...

    Sanding is a good idea.
