Solution to fuschia gall mite?

last summer all of my hardy fuschias were affected by the gall mite. I read up on the net and following a suggested solution to break the cycle of the mites, I am hopeful that I have sorted it out as it hasnt come back so far!! In the middle of last summer I put on disposable gloves, cut off every scrap of growth on every fuschia, even if it looked ok, which was burnt including any leaves around the plants. I also cleaned down my tools and shoes with Citrox!!I sprayed on Bug Clear Ultra solution, and then repeat sprayed 2 weeks later to catch the next cycle of mites. This year, no sign of mites, and full flowering..... i dont like to use chemicals as a rule but faced with losing my favourite flowers, made an exception. Has anyone else tried anything else?

  • I have the same problem with mine this year. Even well established shrubs- so I’m going to try cutting them back hard for winter.  I Will also leave outSide the tender ones to try and freeze the mites off, before putting them inside. Then try a “smoke bomb” insect killer in early spring!  We live in Essex and several friends have it too. It’s such a shame- ruins their flowering period.

Cut them back really hard. Clean your secateurs before touching unaffected plants. Hygiene is most important. It helps too if your plants are not grown close together
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • I had one season completely clear then this summer the mites were back! As we are in sunny Devon the chance of spells of really cold weather is remote. So I have dug out the plants. i will just have to treat them as annual plants and not the hardy bushes I have enjoyed. In my street I saw lots of the same problem so if no one else bothers I cant see how I can prevent my plants getting blighted. Good luck with your plants!
