Patio bed help

Hi in the attached example, would you need a retaining wall underneath the edge of the final slabs (hidden away) before the bed as well as the final retaining wall?

I want to do similar but checking on how. Thanks all.

You mean the last ‘step’ that’s level with the grass at the front of the pic? I would advise digging down around 10cm, a bit bigger than the paved area so you can insert a simple formwork (planks of wood in a rectangle) and pouring a concrete slab into this frame. Remove planks when concrete set. The surface of the concrete needs to be lower than that of the finished floor level, to allow for the the thickness of the stone slabs + 1cm thickness of outdoor flexible tile adhesive. This will give you a good firm base and your tiles won’t wander off, so to speak...

This gives you an idea, the little grey tiles are 10cm2, proud of the adjoining area in my case but can be sunk down like in your example:

Hi thank you for your reply.

I'm sorry though, I think I haven't been clear enough...

I am asking about the tier where the slabs stop and the beds begin. Is there anything retaining the slabs at that point? For example 2 retaining walls, 1 for the whole tier, and 1 for the edge of the slabs?

Oh I see, Matt, sorry got the wrong end of the stick! Yes there probably is and should be retaining wall there, to retain the soil under the edge of main patio area and support the concrete slab upon which the tiles are laid.
