Hypericum

We have been given a hypericum plant by our lovely neighbours.  The label says it grows approx 1 metre tall + width. Any recommendations for planting - do slugs eat them - shade/sun etc. Thank you.

They are almost 'bomb-proof' GD.  I've seen them happy in deep shade, sunny and dry and all conditions in between.  Slugs don't touch 'em.  Can be invasive though, so keep an eye on it.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thanks for the useful advice and warning Bob, we will be planting it out tomorrow, close to the new Silver Birch tree that we planted earlier this year, so the plant will have some shade and plenty of water as we help the tree to establish. The flowers are so delicate, and the bees have made acquaintance with them already!

That is another plant that is in my naughty corner this year along with Creeping Jenny. It seeds everywhere and the seedlings in the paving are a **** to get out. Had the weedkiller out yesterday on them.

@GuernseyDonkey, do you know which type of hypericum it is?
Are the flowers large or small, leaves dark or pale green?

  • Yes, just checking out the label (which is in many languages) it is H. inodorum.  The label tells me it likes sun or shade, grows to roughly 1m x 1m and has lovely yellow flowers which the bees appear to be attracted to and then red berries. Does it die down over the winter or do I need to cut it down, assuming it will re-appear next year.

Don't touchit!! It will overwinter really well and the birds will eat the berries. When it gets too big then you could trim it a little but as a baby leave well alone.
  • Eeek, I thought you were going to tell me it was poisonous to the touch Biofreak, but luckily not.  Yes, I did wonder about the red berries, some the birds seem to love berries and others aren't at all appealing to them. So a low maintenance plant - hooray!
