You'll gradually get a build up of detritus in the bottom anyway little bee, just from plants etc. All sorts of creatures live and breed in it. Some people like to add a ittle bit when they put their pond in, especially if they're planting directly into the  bottom.
Don't think I've ever done that, as it tends to accumulate fairly quickly  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

No you do not need to put dirt into the pond.  As Fairygirl says, it will build up naturally over time.  You are more likely to need to remove the build up than add to it.

If  you go onto the Bradshaw website they will work out how much you need. You just type in your measurements and they will do it for you .

    You tube’s good.
when I started mine I wanted a completely wild pond, I found this book on amazon and followed it.  https://www.amazon.co.uk/complete-wildlife-pond-Wildlife-maintain-ebook/dp/B00D3RUDRC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1531823570&sr=8-1&keywords=Alex+Sally
There used to be a 10% discount code for Bradshawes at the back.
its definitely getting well on the way to being wild!
