  Got a photo Lyn,  I thought Gendarme was the French Police?

  If so, those suck the juice from seeds forming on mallows & lime trees.  Harmless to most plants.

  I might have forgotten to hit 'post' for the shrub ID (duh!)
  
  Here is photo of (insect)
  Gendarme - so called as they resemble the uniform of the 1700s Gendarmes. I see them in abundance in my friends' garden in France - they seem to like dry, stony areas. Never seen one here before.
