Is this broccoli?

Earlier this year, I was given some 'cauliflower' seeds, which I planted in a (large) pot in my garden.

Below is a photo of them right now. This doesn't look like cauliflower at all to me - in fact it looks a lot more like purple sprouting broccoli.

I've never grown anything like this before - am I right?

Also, the internet suggests that purple sprouting broccoli should flower at the start of the year - not July. If it is that, why might it be flowering now? And is it okay to harvest?

It's certainly broccoli of some sort and the hot, dry weather may have made it bolt, if it is purple sprouting.  There are lots of types though so I'd suggest cutting and eating any heads which look like that as there seem to be many sideshoots lower down which will then turn into smaller heads.

Broccoli of one sort or another (there are summer types now) so eat and enjoy.  As has been said start by cutting the central shoot and that'll stimulate the growth of some side shoots.  Watch out for cabbage white butterflies laying their eggs on the back of the leaves ... I'm inspecting mine and removing eggs every day  :)

Thanks guys - I've cut the central shoot now!

Also thanks for the super-speedy responses. I've only just begun growing things, so will bookmark this forum!

Yes, those butterfly eggs have been troublesome over the past few weeks. Luckily I've managed to get rid of most before they develop into catterpillars, but some have made it!
