Honeysuckle

Couple of questions re a honeysuckle in its first year.

Some if it’s leaves have gone yellow, are dropping and have these marks; see picture.

Also should I prune the growth? Thanks in advance for any help.

I would say they need a lot of watering regularly. I would personally prune it back to give the chance to develop a good root system in its first year.

    Is it in a container?

  • Is it in a container?
No in the ground but probably a restricted soil area with paving

So prune the upper growth entwined thro the trellis?

That's better than in a container as they like a cool damp root-run and containers can overheat.  It will need plenty of water if the root area is restricted.  Mulching with leafmould or compost spring and autumn will help keep the moisture in too.

The yellowing leaves with blackish blotches look like signs of powdery mildew to me ... plants that are stressed due to lack of water often succumb to this and lose leaves so keep the soil moist.

If the young plant is stressed, I would bring down straggly growth. Just my take on it.

all the right advice on here, but contrary to, I have a couple of honeysuckles in small window box pots that are doing very well, the best one I have is Hall prolific, in mostly shade, stays damp usually, yes they are woodland plants, thats not in a pot, I wouldnt prune it now, after flower, depending on variety.I must admit when mine get powdery mildew, they get the classic white blotches.

I find the classic white blotches form over the black patches
