Bulb storage

I dug our Dutch Iris and Gladiolus Byzantinus bulbs up a couple of months ago. The stalks have now withered. I would like to plant in troughs till next Spring and leave outdoors. Would it be better to store them in a cool dry place over Winter, without planting them at all?
