    It's instant.
How do we know beer has the same effect on slugs as humane humans. It might  cause them a horrible death. Salt certainly does.
Snip slugs and stamp on snails. If there's a way to round them up, so much the better.
I'm going to share a handful.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

I did that once, putting them on the bird table, they never touched them, I’ve got a good assortment of birds here, but none wanted them and hedgehogs only eat them as a last resort.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

I sometimes put the peanuts in a bird feeder on the ground, but it's not really big enough. It only takes a few slugs to cover it. I guess you could use ground peanuts if worried about fledglings or a fine mesh over the peanuts on the ground, or put them in a slug trap. My local birds don't seem to like peanuts. I had them in feeders for birds for ages and they were never taken. I put out beer traps too and had zero slugs. I might try beer and peanuts in the same area (where they now congregate) and see if the beer has an improved success rate. Should I put out benches and ashtrays?

    Some salt & vinegar crisps?
My daughter's guinea pig used to have vast congregations of slugs on its food dish every night, so that you couldn't see the cereals for slugs.
Possibly cheap birdseed would work as well, if placed where birds wouldn't get it too easily. No risk to fledglings, no great risk of rats if not used regularly. Might need more weeding though!

I think you could be right B'cupdays. They snaffle up any bird seed that gets knocked to the ground here and left - especially if it's on a paving slab or similar. I only use good stuff but they're not fussy  ;)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Maybe we should run trials with different food stuffs to see which work best.

I'm not convinced that death is instantaneous when you cut a slug in half. Death is a process. The human brain can be deprived of oxygen for four minutes before permanent brain damage sets in. So it may continue to function after the head is severed, and with the cut end of the spinal cord exposed, how do we know what sensation may be experienced? I accept that alcoholic drinks may cause distress.  I'll rethink my slug control measures.

Nematodes work well but I don't know if they hurt the slug?
  • Sorry, I  did cringe a bit at the thought of cutting slugs in half!
  • Don't nematodes eat slugs from the inside out? That's what I thought @debs64.
