How long can you leave grass without watering it?

I haven't watered my grass (weedy lawn) since the drought started.
I know it recovers from long periods without water - but how long is too long - and how can you tell?

Ours isn't a lawn - grass with other stuff.   Last year it had 20.5cm of rain between mid Jan and mid December and we didn't water it once.   It went green when the rains came.   It's still vaguely green now but won't be for much longer - very hot and no rain in sight for the next week.

I'm happy to leave it. I will think of the weeds as  green jewels nestled in a bed of straw.

We ended up with a lovely patch of sea holly on ours last year - no grass to mow so it had time to grow.

I was of the belief that grass was a shallow rooted plant.........?

I absolutely refuse to water grass. It's never been this dry here in the west of Scotland, for this length of time, but grass will spring back as soon as there's some steady rain. We're  supposed to get some today. Grass is pretty tough Mary - it's amazing how it can bounce back. I'm enjoying seeing all the front gardens covered in clover just now, and I have a few nice little clumps of Veronica in mine   :)
Been quite a few weeks since we've had any, and that was falling on dry ground anyway, so really made no difference. Some plants are fine, some aren't, but no one here grows drought loving plants!

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
