Laying new turf

Hi
I a planning on starting again with my lawn as it is full of weeds and moss by covering it with weed control matting and then laying new turf.
Over the years the lawn has sunk and developed bumps. I am wanting to fill these in. Is it possible to use bags of compost from the supermarket to do this. It is only a small lawn and I don't want to have to buy a tonne of compost.
