Is My Palm Tree Sad?

edited July 2018 in Problem solving
My palm tree has started to sprout from the lower parts of the trunk this year and not sure why.

The whole tree is about as tall as my house. Any suggestions? X

Possibly some damage on the stem. If you want them keep them. If you want to reduce the size of the overall thing, Cut above the growing one ( in winter, not now). If you don't like them, slice them off close to the stem, again in winter.  You don't show the top , but it looks healthy enough to me.

What's the black box thing on the trunk?

Any chance of a photo of the top of the tree?  If the growing point in the centre has died (frost sometimes kills it), this is how they rejuvenate and I would follow fidgetbones advice.

Solar panel for party lights we have hanging between the trees, there is another one on the other side.

If you've banged a nail or screw or other metal spike in the trunk to support your solar panel you may well have condemned your palm tree to a slow, lingering death as they interfere with sap and thus nutrient flows.

Eekkkk I’ll keep my fingers crossed it’s ok.

Here is the the rest of it.

It’s the one on the left. I’ve never done anything to either since moving in, no feeding or watering.
