According to the internet, there are 12 different similar looking centranthus valerian both red and white in colour. Pete8 As far as I can make out your’s a Centranthus-ruber-var-coccineus, whereas my smelly one is a centranthus ruber ALBUS valerian.
I find they do smell quite nasty at certain times of the day at certain times of the year and also suspect it's something to do with the roots. Most of them around here are growing in the cracks bvetween paviors and gravel etc. When I pull them up from my slate drive (which has weed fabric beneath), the whole white tuberous root comes out easily.
Agree about the perfume 'poison' but quite like the Alice Cooper hit of the same name.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
Isn’t it from the same family with Valerina Officinalis, the medicinal herb that’s supposed to help you sleep better? That one does smell quite strongly, not the flowers but the stems and root. My sleeping tea has it and it can smell quite repelling. Maybe that’s the one you have.

That's the Valerian smell I know PP and it is a bit whiffy. I haven't sniffed the plant but of course I will now. As for Poison...it was rank! Anyone remember Blue Stratos? I was allergic to that even when I couldn't smell it. If anyone nearby was wearing it I sneezed myself to a standstill!
