Lupin Aphids

Has anyone successfully seen these little b*ggers off or given up growing Lupins? I hear they return yearly..

    Chucked mine in the bin yesterday as they were covered in aphids and looked terrible.  Won't bother next year.

    Soapy water spray ad nauseum.

    I squashed loads using baby wipes cos they were huge n crunchy, eeugh! A few days later they were covered in them again, chomped off all the seed pods and we're right down in the middle of the crown. They seemed extra big, are they a specific kind only found on lupins? I'd never seen them that size before.

    Yes, American lupin aphids are the big ones, kp:
    I gave up on growing lupins because of them.
    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

    I had good results with homemade soap spray.

    Yes, the lupin aphids are 3x the size of their 'regular' counter parts. I've decided to dig both Lupins up and give them the boot after hearing they over winter with ease. 

    Not prepared to spray anything as I have lots and lots of bumbles feeding on neighbouring plants

    I've a 5L sprayer constantly charged with fairy liquid in water. Go around late evening when pollinators are in bed and spray most things that are likely targets for green and black fly. Prophylaxis works better that trying to control an established infestation. No trouble with our lupins so far this year.
