Braeburn Apple Problem

Hi,
I recently bought a small Braeburn apple tree, which is bearing fruit. However some of the apples have a brown crust that appears to be erupting from the apple (see attached photos). I wondered if this was caused by something wrong that I am doing or whether it is a disease etc. I have kept the tree well watered through the recent hot spell.
Any help to eradicate would be welcomed
Regards
Keith

It's often the codling moth caterpillar to blame for that type of damage.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
  • Thank You Pansyface and Wild Edges for you prompt replies. If I find that it is a caterpillar or bug is there some sort of treatment that I can purchase that will prevent it happening to the other apples?

It is too late now, codlin moth treatment needs to be done just as the flowers are finished to be effective.
Next spring hang a Moth trap in the tree and use it as an indicator as to when you need to spray.
Also collect up and bin (not compost) any affected apples as the larva of the moth overwinters in the soil after leaving the fallen fruit.
