Gertrude Jekyll regularly wins polls on the best scent. I'd agree with it.

Gj is the best I've scent I've come across. I'd be interested if the real rose officicadoes would be in agreeance

I wouldn't say that...  it comes and goes with 'GJ', as it does with 'Munstead Wood'... there are many roses including Austin's that have great scent of one sort or another, some are very different to each nose out there..

Just to give a few roses that you may not have heard of, that are more powerful would be..

'Chartreuse de Parme' a hybrid tea rose
    'Anna Pavlova' modern shrub rose
'Mme. Isaac Pereire' an old Bourbon rose
'Mme. Letuve de Colnet' another old Bourbon rose
'Mme. Lauriol de Barny'...  yet another Bourbon..

and for an Austin 'Royal Jubilee' is consistently sweet, very sweet, almost sickly..
Others would be 'Jude The Obscure'..'Scepter'd Isle'... 'Wollerton Old Hall'...

...dozens more... but you need to grow quite a lot of these to find out...

Your conditions must be different to here in Essex.
I've had GJ planted close to my driveway for about 20 years.
When they're in flower I have sniff twice a day as I pass them when I take my dog out. I've found she's always beautifully scented and very healthy too, if a bit thorny.

I have Scepter’d Isle and the scent has been amazing this year as well as producing masses of flowers and still going strong. The other rose worth a mention and new to me this year is DA Princess Alexandra of Kent, beautiful large rosy pink flowers and gorgeous scent. My roses have been much better this year as they are more established and not as droopy.

I like the scent of Lady Emma Hamilton. I think it's the one that David Austin uses to perfume their hand cream.

Depends on individual sense of smell. My favourites for scent are Yolande d'Aragon, Felicia, Mrs Oakley Fisher, Indigo, Gertrude Jekyll, The Prince, Jude the Obscure, Jubilee Celebration, Mary Rose and Maid Marian. Some of these come with other drawbacks.

Deep Secret - a velvety red bush rose of good habit. The aroma is very strong, in fact I picked a rose put it in a vase, the rose dried out and even six months later the scent was very apparent.

Just out of curiosity what are people most fragrant climbers? as naturally all of the above are shrub or old rose types. I know that GJ can be grown as a climber but would be more intrested in the larger type.

    Thanks
