Suggestions for plants for hanging baskets/planters

As we're now in mid summer our planters are starting to look a bit tired as the stocks, Livingston daisies and African marigolds are dying off. Any suggestions of what I can replace them with so they still look vibrant gping into the remainder of summer and autumn?

Hello Ryan. It depends on what kind of plants that you like but Petunias and their various varieties are always floriferous until the first frosts. I was introduced to a plant called Lofos by another member of the forum and these seem to be very rewarding too.

    Are you dead heading?

Autumn flowering stocks and wall flowers could be nice for planters, and scented. Gaillardia are good vibrant perennials.

If you are looking for colour and no deadheading, it has to be Calibrachoa, sometimes called Million Bells. Masses of flowers in all shades and now in double form. Has a trailing habit and easy to care for.

Felicia Amelloides is also another easy care plant that has a slightly sprawling/trailing habit. The variegated version ensures the leaves are just as eye catching when not in flower.

If you are looking for something a bit more unusual, Lotus Berthelotti, sometimes called Parrot's Beak, has deep orange flowers against fine silvery foliage that tumbles over pots and baskets.

Finally, Diascias are hard working plants, and given sun they will flower for months. All are quite drought tolerant and require little deadheading. Just a tidy up when they get a bit straggly, but a light cut will encourage more flowers.

Many are tender plants, so can over winter if you move pots to a sheltered area over the winter months, otherwise, treat as summer bedding.

Diascias seem to be pretty hardy if your garden is sheltered. They have a great array of colours.
