Thick tomato skins.

This week I have tentatively tried sampling the tomatoes that have first turned red.  The first to show was Tumbling Tom and it is a bit 'skinny', Tumbling Tiger is even worse.  Other varieties are OK.  Does this mean they're not ready yet?

Do they look ripe inside? T/tom shouldn't have any green when cut open and should feel ripe.
I used to grow Ttom, but found the flavour to be very bland - a great yield, but of tasteless (in my opinion) toms. Look pretty in a hanging basket, but about as tasty as Moneymaker - in my opinion :)
    I've not grown T/tiger

I had a few sungold ready so far - delicious! - sweet and flavourful with a nice tang. I noticed the skins while enjoying them, but I've been used to supermaket toms since last October. Just so good to have the real thing again :) if only they'd ripen...

I think it means they are getting a bit hot and/or short of water. Hardly surprising this summer

raisingirl:  They're certainly hot this summer but watered twice a day (we're in North Devon).

Pete8:  I usually tend to agree with you.  TT and MM are a bit bland, the first Sungolds are lovely and the supermarket toms are a waste of time (despite their attractive packaging!)

Sungold does have a bit of a tougher skin.. but the sweet candy taste makes up for it.  They are my favorite to grow.  I find them easier to slice and less prone to splitting on the plant, probably on account of that thicker skin.
