Clematis alpina question please

  • I am just thinking of planting an alpina Heisingborg along side a Golden Oldie rose, the aspect is facing south, with an irrigation watering system alongside (the front of our cottage).  The blurb says it grows to 9ft. or 3metres. Is this a good idea Dove/Fairy and anyone else who is in the know of these alpina clematis?

Not sure GD - I'd reckon the rose will need a lot of water, and the alpina may get a bit too  much if you have irrigation. Perhaps Richard will come along and advise.

If you get loads of drainage in the planting hole, and surrounding area, for the clem, that may be ok. Or could you do what I do with some borders, and put a physical barrier down, effectively giving you two different mediums, for two plants with different needs   :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

  • That's a thought Fairy, I will think on it. Yes, there could be too much water, they say clems like a lot of water and feeding, but just how much I don't know. I have clems climbing up most trees and four on a trellis and we don't have a lot of wall for them to climb up so I am resorting to larger plants and the Golden Oldie rose is quite large so I thought it may be suitable.  Hopefully Richard will come along and advise.

Most clems do like plenty of  moisture GD, but the alpinas seem to be different in that they like a drier spot. Mine is quite mature and in a tiny little raised bed [although the roots can get down into the ground ] and although we get plenty of water over winter, this dry spell has gone on a long time, and it seems perfectly happy.
It may also vary variety to variety though, so I may be completely wrong.
Hopefully Richard can advise regarding that. Would hate you to get one and find it doesn't survive.

  • I can't grow the atragenes ( alpina, macropetala, koreana ) here because the ground is too wet in Winter.  They have a different root system than most other clematis.
  • Thank you for your input Richard, I will take heed of that and perhaps try a different clematis in that spot.  I was going to plant a Guernsey Cream to climb up the rose bush, but as the rose is Golden Oldie I thought that cream on cream flower would not stand out, I really need a contrasting colour to show both plants to their best.
