Magnolia Trees against house wall

Hi, I have just moved into a cottage that has two fully grown magnolia trees on the lawn and two that are growing and trained against the wall of the house. The ones against the walls are now well overgrown. How, and when should I prune them? Can I cut them like a I would cut a hedge?

Anything you cut will mean no flowers next year. They are better cut after flowering which is just as the leaves start too, this means you can see better what wants to go. Then new growth that year will have next year's flowers. They are not easy to shape where you have them, but if you don't mind a lull in flowering they will take to cutting in spring.

Have a read of this info from the RHS which includes wall training magnolias - https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=599
