I have heard that leaving honey out from a different hive can cause problems for the bee. Maybe the way it does for an errant husband/wife with an unfamiliar odour.
I think Glasgowdan is right. The circumference of the spoons reflection has dried up the grass.
So, to clarify, I was reviving a couple of bees who seemed to be struggling late evening and left the spoon for them. It's the brown patch on the lawn I was concerned about, nothing else.
Apologies, we went off on the bee side of things ! Possibly some kind of fairy ring, and the spoon just a coincidence?
What are fairy rings?
The most damaging fairy rings are slowly spreading colonies of the fungus Marasmius oreades, which live in the roots of turf, altering the appearance of the grass and producing toadstools at certain times of the year, mainly in late summer and autumn.
Other colonies of fungi cause fairy rings as well, but most have no effect on the turf, or even seem to enhance the growth.
All types of lawns and areas of rough grass can be affected by fairy rings.
Symptoms
Symptoms are variable, depending on the fungi responsible. Most have virtually no effect on the turf and are only noticed if toadstools appear.
You may see the following symptoms:
An irregular ring of dead grass gradually expanding across the turf, caused by Marasmius oreades
Immediately adjacent to the dead grass, the grass may be greener than usual
Crops of brown toadstools at certain times of the year
Jessica, there are things that you can use on your grass to revive it but its best to know what it actually is that has caused the browning. It is unlikely to be the sugar solution. There are several types of Lawn Disease treatments which you can find online.
