Pest I.D.

Hello-can anyone identify this pest/substance on my echinops?

I can see aphids but also a sort of crystallised ‘crust’ (the white stuff in the pic). Any idea how to deal with it or can it be ignored?

Thanks!

Is this on your whole plant or just some sections? I would prune out the leaves, they are very damaged. Then jet spray the flowerheads with water. If the stems leading up to the flowerheads are very damage, I recommend cutting off those stems.

Avoid feeding your plants if you can. Any new young growth will attract aphids in the warm heat.

Maybe thistle aphid or one of the woolly species? Have a look here:

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
  • Ok, thanks-will give them some attention ASAP... Was thinking I’d got off lightly aphid-wise this year, was wondering where they all were! Will check out the thistle aphid, 600 species it says...
