Help please! Is my well established elaegnus submacrophylla dying?? Powdery leaves, yellow dead leaf

hi

youve kindly given me help on here before.

We moved into our house a couple of years ago and there is a large well established elaegnus submacrophylla (ebbingei) - identified thanks to this forum 🙂- in the corner of the garden.
it is over 6 foot tall and 6 foot wide. I really like it but these past few weeks it looks like one side is dying, the leaves are all shrivelled and dry and yellow.
the rest of the bush has about 4 inches of leaves that look and feel like they have a white / silver powder on them.

Is this a disease?! Should I prune it back to the ‘healthy’ looking green leaves underneath the powdery ones? And should I chop off the yellow dead ones?

any help gratefully appreciated, I tried searching google but some plants seem to have silvery leaves.

thanka again

I don't have that variety but I do have eleagnus and from time to time, branches do die back for no obvious reason. The rest seems to remain healthy.

Thanks Posy. 🙂 do you prune the branches that have died back or do you just leave them?

I cut them out. They don't recover.

My variegated Eleagnus has new leaves that are a bit silvery, but I think what you have there is powdery mildew. It is often caused by dryness at the roots and there's a lot of it about this year! If you can, give the shrub a bucket or two of water to help it along.

    Thank you!! That makes sense
