Best time to help bergenias?

I have a patch (about eight foot wide) of bergenias. I love them and some are quite special. I look after them well but can see they are now riddled with ground elder. Would it be feasible to dig the lot up and remove as much ground elder as possible? Would Autumn be the best time? Spring is obviously their moment of glory .....

    These plants are very strong and will come back in most circumstances. Another way is to apply a little glyphosphate to the ground elder
