Acer Drainage!

Hello, can you tell me what I should do, please.

I have bought a couple of Acers and decided to repot but have forgotten to put stones in the bottom of the pot for drainage. Is it best to repot again now with stones for drainage or would it be fine to wait to do it next spring?

Thanks

Glen

Hello Glen. If it is not too long since you re-potted them you could empty them out and start again but as long as you stand the pots on 'feet' so that the water can drain through and away satisfactorily they should be ok until next Spring.

I don't think stones or anything else in the bottom of a pot helps drainage at all. If concerned I would mix some grit into your planting medium or put the pot on feet, as LB says. Though even this lifting is only necessary (I'd say) if the pot is sitting directly on earth and the holes might clog up. Other would have a different view.
  • Thank you, Ladybird, I have started to repot and have also added Mulch as well as drainage. Also...

I don't suppose you have any good ideas at keeping Squirrels out have you? At the moment I am trying lines of cocktail sticks and see if they work. Cajun pepper I was told to try but I'm afraid it didn't work. Any other ideas?

I'm sorry Glen I really don't know. Whenever I see the little rascals trying to get at my bird feeders I just go out and shoo them away. However they have left me with several gifts scattered randomly around my pots and garden, in the shape of seedling oak trees. I repot these and hope that I will be able to find someone who would like one of them.
p.s. prickly trimmings from Holly or Berberis might be a bit of a deterrent.
