Why would someone do this?

    Might be an ornamental crabapple.  Cherries and plums don't have the remains of the flower (calyx) left on the bottom of the fruit like that.  Still just a guess though.

    Edit: just noticed this has fallen off of some of the fruit and the leaves do look very plum-like, so going for cherry plum now! :)

    The stone surround looks interesting. I thought at first it was just some old pavers but if you look closely it does seem to be all one piece with a lip on the inside. Wonder if it has a bottom and how deep it is???

    Looks to me like a cement support for a man-hole cover.

  • It's an odd one isn't it? I also thought it was paving slabs on their sides to begin with but no. 
    Also there would be no need to raise the level of the soil as the garden is pretty large so the tree could have been put anywhere more suitable. 
    Didn't think about possible burial ground.. interesting. 
    So far it's an arms length deep and I think that's it as I can get my spade under. I wouldn't have thought it would have a bottom, surely the tree would die.
